WHY CHANGE TREATMENT?

Cilazapril is a type of medicine called an angiotension-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that is used in New Zealand much more than any other country. There is only one place in the world that makes the active ingredient for cilazapril. This means that if there were a manufacturing or supply issue, it would result in shortages for those who take it. To make sure this doesn’t happen, cilazapril is slowly being phased out and to give you time to change to another suitable treatment that works in a similar way.¹

COVERSYL® is also an ACE inhibitor, and is a suitable alternative for cilazapril. It works in the body in the same way, making it an easy change from cilazapril.

ABOUT COVERSYL®

COVERSYL® belongs to a group of medicines called ACE inhibitors and contains the active ingredient perindopril erbumine. ACE inhibitors work by widening your blood vessels which helps blood to flow more easily to vital organs such as the heart, brain and kidneys.

WHAT IS COVERSYL® USED FOR?

COVERSYL® is a prescription medicine used to treat high blood pressure (also known as hypertension), heart failure and established coronary artery disease.
HOW DO YOU TAKE COVERSYL®?

COVERSYL® is a once-daily treatment that lowers blood pressure over a 24 hour period. Your doctor will determine how much you should take each day. This is usually one 2 mg, 4 mg or 8 mg tablet depending on your personal circumstances and what condition is being treated.
WILL I EXPERIENCE SIDE EFFECTS WHEN TAKING COVERSYL®?

COVERSYL® helps most people with high blood pressure, heart failure or established coronary artery disease, but it may have unwanted side effects in a few people. WHY DOES MY MEDICATION LOOK DIFFERENT?
You may notice that your tablets look different to the previous ones you were taking:
- COVERSYL® 2 mg tablets are round and white.
- COVERSYL® 4 mg tables are green and rod-shaped.
- COVERSYL® 8 mg tablets are round and green, with a heart on one face and a logo on the other face.
IF MY LAST DOSE OF MEDICATION WAS CILAZAPRIL, WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY NEXT DOSE?

Cilazapril and COVERSYL® have different dosing. If you took cilazapril at your last dose then please contact your doctor who will tell you what dose of COVERSYL® you need to take.
IF MY LAST DOSE OF MEDICATION WAS ANOTHER BRAND OF PERINDOPRIL, WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY NEXT DOSE?

COVERSYL® dosing is the same as other brands of perindopril, so simply take your COVERSYL® tablet at the same dose when your next dose is due.
WHY CAN I NOT CONTINUE USING THE PREVIOUS MEDICINE?

If you were taking cilazapril, your doctor has been asked to change you to an alternative ACE inhibitor as cilazapril will no longer be available in New Zealand by mid-2023.¹

COVERSYL® is fully funded in New Zealand for the treatment of high blood pressure, heart failure and established coronary artery disease, so there should be no difference in costs outside of your normal prescription fee. Normal doctors charges will apply.
